The 3 New Year’s Resolutions Job Seekers Can Actually Keep

new years resolutions

New Year’s resolutions: Easy to make; hard to keep. If ‘finding a new job’, (or simply “find a job”) is on your list, we have a few resolutions to add to your list. But unlike the always daunting “go to the gym 5 days a week”; these are much more doable!

Stay sane, It’s easy to lose your cool while job searching. It can be incredibly stressful and the process seems endless, but remember those around you only care about you and want you to succeed as much as you do. Memorize that statement and use it like a mantra. When you start to feel overwhelmed, take a step back and repeat it. You don’t have to be positive all the time, but you do have to try.

Take a day off. Yes, a whole day dedicated to you and what you want to do. Job searching can feel like a full-time job, so take time for yourself to re-focus and rejuvenate your attitude. Sleep-in, go out for breakfast, get a massage, watch Netflix in bed all day; do something for yourself and don’t feel guilty about it. We ALL need a day off every now and then.

Google yourself. In a world where technology and social media are king (and queen), it’s safe to assume potential employers will search for you online. You should know what they’re going to find and, if necessary, clean it up. Be sure to include only pertinent information for past jobs, and take down old statuses complaining about any jobs or bosses. Don’t forget to remove the pictures of you doing drunk fish lips in bathroom mirrors from college (or lock down those privacy settings like Alcatraz)!

Three small things can make a big difference—and they’re fairly easy to do. Instead of making your usual top 10 and scrapping them by January 31, try this list, feel good about crossing them off, and remember that all things are temporary.

2016 is your year!
