Branch: Portsmouth Shift: All Shifts Security Clearance: Not Required Start Date: September 24, 2025 Duration: 12 Months Hours per Week: 40 Pay Rate: $27.31/hr ( $120.00 a day Perdiem for those who qualify)
Position Summary
Hutco, Inc. is seeking experienced Outside Machinists to support shipyard operations at the Newport News Shipbuilding facility. Candidates must have at least 4 years of shipyard or naval experience as a First-Class Machinist. This role demands familiarity with shipboard mechanical systems, the ability to work from technical drawings, and a strong commitment to safety and quality.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Perform mechanical repairs, overhauls, and installations on shipboard equipment.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Work with various systems and equipment including:
    • Winches, anchor windlasses, steering gear
    • Air compressors, valves, and pumps
    • Diesel engines, gas turbines, reduction gears
    • Propulsion systems, shafts, propellers, rudders
    • Generators, steam turbines, hydraulic systems
    • Elevators, doors, weapons systems, deck equipment
  • Conduct valve overhauls (steam/WOG), lube oil flushing, hydrostatic testing, and optical alignment.
  • Perform shaft alignment and precision fitting using tools such as:
    • Micrometers, dial indicators, rulers, and calipers
    • Torque wrenches, grinders, boring bars, drill presses, portable mills
  • Adhere to all technical, quality, and safety standards per OSHA and shipyard regulations.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience: 4+ years as a First-Class Machinist in shipyard or naval settings.
  • Technical Proficiency:
    • Skilled in precision measuring instruments and alignment tools.
    • Familiarity with hull insert installations, fasteners, and shipbuilding nomenclature.
    • Must be capable of working from blueprints and performing complex mechanical work.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Capable of lifting 50 lbs regularly and working in confined spaces.
    • Must be able to climb ladders, work at heights, and perform physically demanding tasks.
    • Tolerance for varied temperatures and humidity conditions.

  • Supervision Level: Independent task management expected after onboarding
