Primary School Teacher (Professeur des coles) Full-time

Rochambeau, The French International School of Washington, DC (Rochambeau), has an opening for a Primary School Teacher (Professeur des coles) Full-time for the 2026-2027 school year.

Location: Bethesda, MD

Reports to: Primary School Director

Job Type: Full-time; Exempt; Faculty Association Collective Bargaining Unit (CBA) applicable

Salary Information: The salary range is $49,911-$109,469 per the Faculty CBA Salary Scale. Teachers will be compensated according to the highest category to which they are entitled in accordance with the degrees and certifications that they hold and the years of applicable experience provided. For example, a teacher with a Bachelor's degree and a teaching credential with 5 years of experience will have a base salary of $57,969.77 per year. A teacher with a Master's degree and teaching certification with 5 years of experience will have a base salary of $61,566.29 per year. A teacher with a PhD and 5 years of teaching experience will have a base salary of $65,461.50 per year. Benefits: In addition to base compensation, this position is eligible for: paid time off, paid holidays, and health and retirement benefits enrollment, which includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and a 403(b) plan.

Position Summary

The Primary School Teacher (Professeur des coles) is responsible for the education of the students in their class(es). It is the role of each Primary School teacher to be sure that all students are safe, secure, and properly supervised at all times. This position requires demonstrating the competencies and behaviors needed to improve student preparedness and academic mastery and to support the core values, vision, and mission of Rochambeau.

Representative Duties

  • Assume responsibility for the education of the students in their class(es) and teach the classes assigned by the Primary School Director.
  • Integrate competencies, goals, and objectives into lesson plans, following the French National Curriculum and Rochambeau educational priorities.
  • Select lesson content and activities appropriate to the needs of each student in relation to the school's philosophy and objectives, utilizing knowledge of the aims and curriculum of the area taught.
  • Maintain records of work covered by their class(es) and keep accurate, complete records of the progress of each student.
  • Regularly and promptly correct all assignments completed by students.
  • Inform parents of students' progress via report cards and, where necessary, letters or individual meetings, and be available for all parent-teacher conferences.
  • Attend all relevant meetings, including planning meetings and teachers' meetings (conseils des matres), and appropriately communicate and interact with other professional staff in academic planning and school committee work.
  • Attend and participate in assigned professional development programs.
  • Ensure appropriate behavior of students in class and around the school, and keep the Primary School Director and administration informed about student absence, lateness, or discipline problems.
  • Care for the classroom(s), ensuring the room(s) is/are attractively decorated and conducive to learning.
  • Maintain inventories of all textbooks and materials issued to students and ensure their return.
  • Maintain a professional manner and appearance and demonstrate behavior that is conscientious and responsible when interacting with students, parents, community agencies, and colleagues.
  • Stay abreast of current educational trends and best practices as these relate to classroom instruction and effective schools.
  • Use and integrate technology as an effective learning tool in the classroom and with students.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned by the Primary School Director and/or his delegates.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Hold the designation of "Professeur des coles Titulaire de l'Education Nationale" or a Bachelor's degree (Matrise or Master 1, Higher preferred) in Secondary Education from an accredited college or university, or hold a teaching degree with a minimum of two years' experience of teaching in the relevant group.
  • Native French fluency.
  • Well-developed and effective communication skills (oral and written) and strong human relations skills; ability to work well with other teachers, support staff, parents, and members of the community.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and use different teaching methods that inspire high student achievement and build an equitable classroom community.
  • Ability to enforce high standards for student behavior.
  • Ability to orchestrate highly effective strategies, material, and grouping to involve and motivate students; ability to analyze and chart data and draw conclusions in order to leverage student growth.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to use innovative, active teaching methods, and solve everyday problems using initiative, flexibility, and creativity.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of information.
  • Regular, predictable, and reliable attendance at work.
  • Computer and technological literacy.
  • Three Professional References (name, position, contact number and email) listed on your CV/resume.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with second language acquisition pedagogy and strong knowledge of co-teaching methods.
  • Familiarity with Google Suite, with the ability to learn and work with the school's integrated data-based software package as needed.
  • Advanced English proficiency is preferred.

Physical Demands

This position primarily operates in a school/office environment. The role requires prolonged periods of sitting, walking, or standing, extensive use of computers and other office equipment, and occasional lifting or moving of equipment up to 25 pounds.
