Job Posting

Responsible for constructing, maintaining and repairing traffic signals, school zones, emergency vehicle safety flashers, traffic video monitoring equipment and communication network. Also, maintains 24/7 emergency on call program to ensure proper operation of the City's traffic signals.

Starting Salary: $21 per hour

Schedule: Monday Friday, 7:30 AM 3:30 PM with a rotating on-call schedule (once a month).

Work Environment: 70% of work is conducted outdoors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install, repair, maintain and test various traffic control and communications equipment.
  • Locate and mark underground traffic facilities for street construction purposes.
  • Participate in 24 hour rotating emergency on call shifts.
  • Program, install and maintain optical switches for video encoders and decoders.
  • Collaborate with contractors to ensure intersections are built to City/State specifications.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 6 months to 1 year advanced training past the high school level
  • 2 years related experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education/Experience: 6 months to 1 year advanced training in the field of electronics, fiber or video transmission
  • 2 - 3 years experience as an Associate Traffic Signal Technician

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of basic electricity and electrical wiring, basic electronics theory as it relates to traffic signal equipment including all equipment at signalized intersections and school flashers
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Fiber Optic, copper wire and wireless communications networking
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety hazards and safety practices utilized in the traffic industry and conforming to the MUTCD
  • Comprehensive knowledge of personal computer and Microsoft Office programs, such as Outlook and Excel
  • Ability to read, write and understand the English language, and read and work from schematics and detailed construction drawings
  • Ability to use various electronic test equipment, such as, amperage meter, volt/ohm meter, megger, NEMA conflict monitor tester and traffic counting devices
  • Skill to operate motorized hand tools, drills and aerial lift equipment

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license
  • IMSA Work Zone certification or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire
  • IMSA Level I Traffic Signals Certification or the ability to obtain within 2 years of hire

Physical Requirements / Work Environment:

Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Job requires working from an aerial device at heights up to 40 feet. Job requires working with energized or live electrical circuits, hand and eye coordination and dexterity of hands, the ability to hear, see and lift and balance up to 100 pounds.
