The Parks Department is hiring seasonal Program Assistant Supervisors for the Summer Special Needs Summer Camp. JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible for supervising the participants in our day camp for the special needs' population. They are responsible for helping to ensure the operations of the campus, both "behind the scenes" and when working directly with Campers under Senior Staff supervision making it run smoothly and following guidelines and procedures of camp. Camp counselors plan, organize, implement, and lead age-appropriate activities for children. MAJOR DUTIES
Always supervise and ensure the safety and overall well-being of the children as well as part-time summer staff, being alert of the needs and/or problems of the individual and as a group
Set-up of activities for the day, including watching, monitoring, and communicating and additional special set-up, cleaning, or maintenance needs to the Recreation Supervisor
Handles all substitute requests of camp staff (finding the alternative staff as needed) while also copying or notifying Recreation Supervisor in all requests
Supervision of counselors in their planning and ensuring it includes a variety of recreational activities for the children including, but not limited to physical activities, table games, indoor group activities, crafts, and sports. Adhere to all recreation department policies and procedures as it concerns equipment and room usage
ALWAYS keep all camp storage space neat and clean
Assist with the training and activities for all part-time staff the week prior to camp start. Including input and creation of materials needed for training
Be familiar with and follow all Parks and Recreation policies and procedures
Prefer to be able to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certification
Maintains and submits accurate records. Ensure a safe counselor to camper ratio is met, purchases, incident reports, attendance, sign in and out sheets, timesheets, etc.
Keep Supervisor informed in advance of program needs or any potential special accommodations with individual staff, children, or parents
Use effective, positive interpersonal communication with fellow co-workers, participants, and parents/guardians of participant
Recognizes and helps monitor camper's dietary restrictions/ allergies and ensures that snacks are given that are appropriate
Mediates and reports any camper's disputes
Knows, enforces, and follows all safety guidelines associated with the camp program, including knowing the whereabouts of those you oversee
Maintains constant surveillance of the pool/ body of water areas
Perform other related duties as assigned

They will supervise campers to ensure their safety, and general well-being while maintaining a schedule for camp participants. accurate program records, as well as ability to demonstrate proper emergency procedures. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects. (Up to 50 lbs.)
Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
Must be able to assist and/or maintain camper during meltdowns.
Be able to participate in physical activity for various amounts of time. (Swimming, hikes, demonstrating game skills, etc.)
Must be able to access all areas of building or off-site locations including pool areas, closets, stairwells, locker rooms, wellness center, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed indoors/outdoors at school gyms or outdoors at park facilities/ pool areas. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred but not required: Education and experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children with disabilities, and/or related field
First Aid, CPR certification
Preferably be at least 21 years of age by date of hire.
High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) required or currently working on
Ability to pass a background check and drug test
CPR/ First Aid / AED Certification preferred
Lifeguard certification helpful but not necessary
Prior experience working with children helpful
Available to work weekdays throughout summer, help assist with other events weeknights and weekends when needed (regular and reliable attendance)
Skill in oral and written communication; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations
Prefer candidates to have prior experience working with children and/or an interest in education or recreation as a possible career goal
Previous camp supervisory role is a plus
