Empowering Afghan Refugees Through Skill & Creativity

This program supports newly arrived Afghan refugees in rebuilding their lives by equipping them with practical, hands-on sewing skills. Classes are designed to be welcoming, culturally sensitive, and empowering — helping participants gain confidence, independence, and a potential pathway to employment or self-sufficiency

Role of Volunteer Teacher:

• Design and deliver engaging, beginner-friendly sewing lessons
• Operating and maintaining a sewing machine
• Measuring, cutting, and working with fabric
• Following simple patterns and completing small projects
• Adapt lessons to mixed skill levels — some participants may have sewing experience from Afghanistan, while others will be complete beginners
• Track individual progress and celebrate every achievement, big or small
• Collaborate with program coordinators and interpreters to ensure an inclusive experience

Qualifications:

• Experience in sewing (professional or strong personal experience)
• Ability to teach beginners in a patient and clear manner
• Comfortable working with diverse cultural backgrounds
• Previous teaching or mentoring experience is helpful but not required
