Intervention Specialist (Special Education Teacher – ED/Behavioral Units) | Garfield Heights, OH

Location: Garfield Heights School District (Elementary & Middle School – Grades 2–8) Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Contract Duration: August 17, 2026 – June 7, 2027 (42 Weeks) Hours: 37.5 hours per week Position Type: Contract Openings: Multiple

Job Summary

The Intervention Specialist supports students with emotional and behavioral needs by developing and implementing individualized education programs (IEPs) within structured classroom settings. This role focuses on providing specialized instruction, behavioral support, and academic guidance to help students succeed both academically and socially.

The Intervention Specialist works closely with general education teachers, support staff, and families to ensure compliance with special education laws while fostering a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities
  • Provide direct instruction in self-contained or small group classroom settings (ED/behavioral units)
  • Implement behavior management strategies and support positive student outcomes
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion and accommodations
  • Collect, track, and analyze student data to monitor progress toward IEP goals
  • Maintain accurate and compliant documentation using the district's IEP system
  • Participate in IEP meetings, IAT meetings, and multidisciplinary team discussions
  • Communicate regularly with parents, staff, and outside agencies
  • Adapt curriculum and instructional strategies to meet diverse student needs
  • Support classroom structure, routines, and a positive learning environment

Classroom & Program Details

  • Grade Levels: Elementary through middle school (approximately grades 2–8)
  • Setting: Emotional/Behavioral (ED) Units
  • Classroom Size: Small, structured classrooms (approximately 10 students max)
  • Support: Dedicated paraprofessional support within each classroom
  • IEP System: SameGoal
  • Modality: Fully in-person
  • Start/Orientation Date: To Be Announced

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field required
  • Strong knowledge of special education practices and behavior management strategies
  • Experience working with students with emotional or behavioral needs preferred
  • Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to manage a structured classroom environment and adapt to student needs

Credentials & Requirements

  • Valid Ohio Intervention Specialist (Special Education) License – required
  • Ability to pass:
    • FBI Fingerprinting
    • State and federal background checks (BCI)
    • National Sex Offender Registry, OIG, and GSA screenings
  • Completion of district-specific onboarding requirements (Agency Volunteer Packet)

Work Environment

  • Elementary and middle school settings across the district
  • Structured behavioral classroom environments
  • Active role requiring classroom management and student engagement
  • May involve managing behavioral challenges and supporting de-escalation strategies
