Hospital Specimen Technician

This is a great opportunity to join a fast-paced hospital laboratory environment where accuracy, attention to detail, and teamwork truly make a difference. As a Hospital Specimen Technician, you'll play a critical role in ensuring patient specimens are processed correctly and efficiently, directly supporting high-quality diagnostic testing and patient care. Location: Chicago, IL Pay Rate: $17.20/hour Employment Type: Contingent Schedule: 8:30am-5pm, M-F, rotating weekends Saturdays 9am-3pm (Training will be 12pm-8:30pm)

By ensuring specimens are properly processed, tracked, and sent out for testing, the Hospital Specimen Technician helps maintain accuracy, compliance, and timely diagnostic results that providers and patients rely on every day.

What You'll Do

  • Perform pre-analytical specimen processing procedures accurately and efficiently in a hospital laboratory environment
  • Follow test ordering policies, specimen requirements, compliance, and legal guidelines for Quest laboratory testing
  • Prepare, process, and send out specimens for testing, including remote pre-accessioning (client-specific)
  • Utilize hospital LIS systems to track specimen flow and interpret tracking and reporting data
  • Print and manage Quest testing reports
  • Troubleshoot specimen issues including missing information, unacceptable specimens, additional sample requests, TIQ/TNP issues, and other processing concerns
  • Manage supply ordering and inventory processes
  • Serve as a liaison between hospital staff and the Quest performing laboratory
  • Handle inbound calls and provide proactive, professional customer support
  • Communicate effectively with hospital laboratory staff, Quest sales teams, and internal partners regarding specimen issues, test requirements, cancellations, and billing questions

What We're Looking For

  • A current, up-to-date resume
  • 1–3 years of relevant work experience
  • Required: specimen processing experience with laboratory exposure
  • Medical terminology and data entry experience required
  • Previous hospital laboratory experience preferred
  • Ability to perform high-volume data entry (6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour)
  • Experience with hospital LIS systems strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to multitask and work effectively in a production-driven environment
  • Comfortable working in a biohazard environment while following safety protocols
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Ability to meet compliance requirements
