Police Officer

Job Objectives: (Nature of Work)

Investigate complaints, crimes, and traffic crashes.

Appropriate use of division facilities and equipment.

Enforcement of City Ordinances, state and federal laws and other regulations.

Writing reports for input to division records system.

Perform public relations activities.

Maintain relationships with external agencies.

Maintain personal and professional competence and awareness.

Essential Job Functions: (Functions essential to attaining job objectives)

Excellent eyesight

Good hearing

Ability to verbally communicate well in English

Physical mobility for climbing, running, and lifting.

Ability to drive automobile with valid operator's license and remain insurable under the City's auto insurance carrier.

Ability to read reports, periodicals, and legal documents and laws in English well.

Good skills in basic mathematics.

Good grammatical skills in writing.

Ability to load, aim, fire, unload, and clean small and long firearms.

Ability to operate typewriter or computer keyboard.

Ability to use fingerprint lifting and rolling techniques.

Ability to overcome resistance and control arrestees.

Ability to work in sometimes noisy, close-quartered areas under great mental, physical, and emotional stress.

Ability to sketch crime and accident scenes.

Ability to cast foot, shoe, tire, or tool marks.

Ability to use drug identification kits.

Ability to read a map and give directions.

Ability to obtain Basic Ohio Peace Officer Training certificate.

Ability to obtain State certificate to operate BAC Verifier.

Ability to obtain State certification to operate LEADS computer terminal.

Job Standards: (Minimum qualifications needed to perform essential job functions)

Eyesight correctable to 20-20.

Hearing correctable to normal range and adequate for use on standard telephone.

Capable of speaking to individuals or large groups of English-speaking persons and being understood.

Capable of climbing tall ladder, fence, earthen bank; running at average speed for reasonable distance of two or three city blocks; lifting to the waist weights of eighty pounds or more.

Demonstrated ability to safely drive automobile with automatic transmission.

Capable of reading, understanding, and remembering information from printed or handwritten materials.

Capable of calculating (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, fractions, and other algebraic formulae) numbers and properly count U.S. currency and change.

Capable of writing, spelling, printing, and typing English to high degree of grammatical correctness to convey the correct idea or intention to the reader.

Ability to pass state-mandated standard firing requirements of the semi-auto pistol, pump shotgun, and M-16 rifle.

Capable of typing on typewriter and computer keyboard to adequately convey intended data or information to other English-speaking persons.

Ability to use a microfilm system and its component parts.

Ability to carry over shoulder or drag a one hundred and fifty pound person up to twenty-five yards from a hazardous location to safety.

Capable of performing in a brutally graphic, morbid crime scene.

Use vehicle-entry lockjock tool

Answering incoming telephone calls and redirect appropriately

Required Experience and Training: (Educational requirements, special license and any other certificate).

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent

Must be 21 years of age at time of hiring

Must successfully complete Basic Peace Officer Certification Training within one year of hiring and at time offered.
