Description

Assistant Principal

The Assistant Principal serves as an instructional leader and key member of the school leadership team, supporting the Principal in fostering a high-quality, equitable, and inclusive learning environment. The Assistant Principal advances the school's mission by promoting academic excellence, positive school culture, and strong family and community partnerships.

The Assistant Principal supports effective school operations, student services, and staff supervision while helping to implement district priorities and initiatives. The Assistant Principal may assume responsibility for school operations in the absence of the Principal.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Support the Principal in providing instructional leadership, including supervising curriculum implementation and promoting high-quality teaching and learning practices.
  • Supervise, support, and evaluate assigned staff in alignment with district standards and educator evaluation frameworks.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive school climate that supports student engagement, belonging, and well-being.
  • Lead and support student discipline practices using equitable, restorative, and developmentally appropriate approaches.
  • Collaborate with staff to support diverse learners, including multilingual learners and students with disabilities.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the master schedule and support effective daily school operations.
  • Use student performance, attendance, and behavioral data to inform decision-making and improve student outcomes.
  • Support family and community engagement, including communication, conferences, and school events.
  • Oversee student-related processes, including attendance, enrollment, discipline, and referrals to student support services.
  • Collaborate with counselors, nurses, and other support staff to address students' academic, social-emotional, and health needs.
  • Assist in the coordination and supervision of extracurricular and enrichment programs.
  • Ensure a safe and orderly school environment, including supervision of students in classrooms, common areas, and school grounds.
  • Support school operations, including communication, reporting, and coordination of resources. Serve as acting Principal in the absence of the Principal, as directed.
  • Performs other duties consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position as assigned.

  • Child and adolescent development
  • Special education laws and regulations (IDEA, Section 504)
  • English Learner (EL) education and language acquisition practices
  • School-based data systems and assessment practices

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Massachusetts Principal/Assistant Principal licensure (appropriate grade level)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Experience in public education at the elementary and/or middle school level Experience supporting multilingual learners and students with disabilities

Reporting Relationships

  • Position Reports to: School Principal

Terms of Employment

  • Position Type: Full time
  • Schedule: 220 days
  • Union association: SAA
  • FLSA Classification: Exempt
  • Salary shall be commensurate with education and experience, in accordance with the Somerville Administrator's Association Collective Bargaining Agreement
