Assistant Prosecuting AttorneySalary: Juvenile Unit rate $86,712 (Criminal track APA), General Felony Unit rate $95,201, Specialty Unit rates $106,873.Department: Criminal Division; Reports to: Unit Supervisor/Juvenile Chief.Hours: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday. Variable hours may apply.FunctionAssistant Prosecuting Attorneys (APAs) represent the State of Ohio in criminal matters and practice before the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, and Eighth District Court of Appeals.This is a rotating criminal division position that starts in the Juvenile Unit, then rotates to the General Felony Unit, and then allows for promotion to criminal division specialty units.RequirementsJuris Doctorate; licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Ohio.ResponsibilitiesPrepare charging instrumentsMake contact with victims, witnesses and police officers for trial preparationParticipate in pretrial conferences with defense counsel and at times the CourtRespond to defense motions for discoveryEngage in pretrial motion practice, advocating the State's position through written motions and responsesParticipate in bindover hearings, suppression hearings, and other types of hearings dealing with legal and evidentiary issuesPrepare and litigate the State's case before a judge or juryAttend and participate in dispositional hearingsRespond to requests for expungements, and motions for judicial releasePrepare and write the State's brief in the Eighth District Court of Appeals and if need be, the Ohio Supreme CourtPerform miscellaneous duties as assignedExperience and SkillsMust have knowledge of computers and computer operating systemsMust possess excellent research and writing skills; requisite understanding of relevant legal issuesMust be available to meet and work outside the normal working hours for trial preparation, to advise law enforcement; and charge casesMust be available to attend community events as necessaryMust be able to perform all other duties assigned, delegated or required of the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney as well as those prescribed by lawMust possess qualities of fairness, a strong work ethic, have the highest integrity; andMust also maintain the confidentiality of law enforcement and investigatory records and other confidential informationMust be able to conduct business in accordance with federal statutes and guidelines, the Ohio Revised Code, and the Ohio Administrative CodeEqual Opportunity StatementEqual Opportunity Employer; Smoke-free and Drug-free Workplace.Reasonable accommodation is available to all employees and applicants.
