Substitute Food Service Position

Under the direct supervision of the Kitchen Director to assist in cooking, serving and cleaning in accordance with Board policy and established district procedures. This position is for 8 hours a day, four days a week.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in cooking, serving and cleaning
  • Order all necessary groceries and supplies for kitchen
  • Receive deliveries following correct procedures
  • Prepare inventory of food and supplies and maintain a proper inventory
  • Verify and sign vendor bills and production sheets
  • Supervise, train substitutes regarding United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines and standardized recipes, proper storage and handling of food according to the Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Point (HAACP) Plan, cashiering, sanitation, dress codes, safety and batch-cooking, and professionalism and positive working relationships and customer service
  • Maintain proper labor hours for cost-control purposes
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships among nutrition personnel

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic math, communication and computer software skills
  • Ability to work with children, including children with special dietary needs
  • Operating knowledge of nutrition services equipment
  • Basic knowledge of cooking and interpreting recipes
  • CDE Training Management preferred
  • Sanitation Certificate required at hire and renewed when necessary to maintain currency
  • Ability to maintain composure and perform responsibilities under pressure
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality about students in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and district guidelines

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Qualifications Profile:

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Experience in food preparation or nutrition service preferred. Certification/License: Motor Vehicle Operator's (DMV) License or ability to provide own transportation. Experience: Successful prior experience working as a lunch or food service aide, preferably in a school district or with children. FLSA Status: Nonexempt
