- Physical Effort: Maintenance Mechanics work in tiring and uncomfortable positions requiring frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Often works on top and under vehicles in cramped positions; performs strenuous work. Frequently lifts and carries items weighting 40 to 50 pounds or more and often must push, pull, turn and position parts, assemblies, equipment and tools. Often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of others and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes.

Frequently is exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritation from acids, fluids, and lubricants. Mechanic typically works on parts and systems that are dirty, oily or greasy. At times the mechanic may be required to use protective safety devices which may be uncomfortable if used for extended periods of time. Occasionally required to work in inclement weather conditions including high winds, rain, snow and freezing temperatures.
